THE DIFFERENCE OF COOKIES AND BISCUITS

Seven Papers Dec 4, 2019 News Comments Off on THE DIFFERENCE OF COOKIES AND BISCUITS

Usually in the evening hours there will be a desire to snack something. Cookies and biscuits can be your choice. Especially while sipping tea or coffee accompanied by these two snacks. Many people often assume biscuits and cookies are the same type of food. But biscuits and cookies are two different things.

What is the basic difference between the two? Here are 4 things that distinguish biscuits and cookies:

  1. The making process

Biscuits are from the Latin “bis cotti” which means “baked twice”. But in this day and age, bakers don’t actually bake them twice, but use temperatures higher than cookies. So if cookies usually use 150-170 ° Celsius, biscuits require a temperature of 180-200 ° Celsius to be perfectly cooked. Therefore, some bakers say that cookies are identical to homemade cakes, while biscuits are more industrial or factory products. Because, making biscuits requires a longer process and high oven temperature to really cook perfectly.

  1. Butter and eggs

Basically, cookies or biscuits use the same ingredients as flour, sugar, and butter. The difference is that biscuits use cold butter (not room temperature) while cookies require room temperature. In addition, the biscuits do not use eggs in the recipe so the taste of the flour is sufficient. In contrast, cookies use eggs so that these cookies have flavors. Then in terms of quantities, biscuits are more dominated by flour and greatly minimize sugar and fat (butter, margarine, or oil).

  1. Topping ingredients and contents

Usually, biscuits and cookies will be added to various ingredients so that they are more flavorful and attractive. However, due to its denser and harder texture, biscuits are often given toppings such as icing sugar or foundation rather than filling material. Now, if the texture is softer cookies so easily mixed with various ingredients such as beans, choco chips, raisins, and so on. On the other hand, there are also types of cookies that are not filled but are topped up like sugar cookies that use icing sugar.

  1. Taste and texture

As the statement above, we can distinguish cookies and biscuits from basic things, such as in terms of taste, both can be made sweet or savory. But when it comes to texture, biscuits tend to be hard, dry, and feel more crispy in the mouth. Whereas cookies have a softer texture and are easier to melt when they are chewed because they contain more butter. In terms of surface shape and appearance, ordinary biscuits are made with basic shapes such as circles, squares or rectangles. In addition, biscuits have a smoother surface. On the other hand, cookies have various types of surfaces, for example if given a filling material, the surface of cookies will look uneven.

In Indonesia, you can classify Eid cookies as cookies.
